Price Check or Order Cutting the Rose
Female Genital Mutilation: The Practice and its Prevention

Efua Dorkenoo  196 pg. Paul & Co./hardcover 1995

Despite a denial that male circumcision damages sexual function, and failure both to convey
how it distorts heterosexual relations and to explore how male genital mutilation customs
(which teach power and control) reinforce FGM (which teaches submissiveness),
'Cutting the Rose' explores basic similarities between the two. It offers useful insight into the
human and cultural dimensions of all genital cutting customs and their eradication.

George C. Denniston, Frederick Mansfield Hodges, Marilyn Fayre Milos  (editors)
544 pg. Kluwer Academic Publishers/hardcover 1999

The problem with circumcision is the unavoidable human rights implications

and who must live the rest of his or her life with the consequences of that removal.

Price Check or Order Marked in Your Flesh: Circumcision from Ancient Judea to Modern America

Leonard B. Glick, 370 pg. Oxford University Press 2005

The book of Genesis tells us that God made a covenant with Abraham, promising him a glorious posterity on the condition that he and all his male descendents must be circumcised. For thousands of years thereafter, the distinctive practice of circumcision served to set the Jews apart from their neighbors. The apostle Paul rejected it as a worthless practice, emblematic of Judaism's fixation on physical matters. Christian theologians followed his lead, arguing that whereas Christians sought spiritual fulfillment, Jews remained mired in such pointless concerns as diet and circumcision. In this book, Leonard B. Glick offers a history of Jewish and Christian beliefs about circumcision from its ancient origins to the current controversy. In Jewish circles it is virtually taboo to question circumcision, but Glick does not flinch from asking whether this procedure should continue to be the defining feature of modern Jewish identity.

Price Check or Order Saharasia
The 4000 BCE Origins of Child Abuse, Sex-Repression, Warfare and Social Violence
in the Deserts of the Old World

James DeMeo  454 pg.  Natural Energy Works/pprbk. 1998

The first geographical, cross-cultural anthropological, archaeological and historical
survey of human family and social institutions. Saharasia proves, among other things,
the destruction of numerous peaceful and technologically developed cultural groups and
city-states in the Old World by widespread and enduring drought and desert expansion, which left terrible famine, starvation and emotionally traumatic conditions in its wake;
as well as the loss of age-old gentle and loving forms of child-rearing and male-female
relations in the remnants of surviving cultures, with subsequent development
of patriarchal authoritarian, and violent, warlike conditions.
Part II, Chapter 5 deals with male and female genital mutilations.

Price Check or Order Secret Wounds

Hanny Lightfoot-Klein  212 pg.  1st Books/pprbk. 2002

The long-awaited final segment of Lightfoot-Klein's trilogy. Once again, the subject of her impassioned treatise is the genital mutilation of non-consenting minors, whose practice has not only been culturally embedded in Africa over millennia, but which has been medicalized in the United States on male, female and intersex children since the mid-eighteen-hundreds. Chapter on male circumcision quotes NOHARMM Director Tim Hammond extensively.

Price Check or Order The Whole Woman
Germaine Greer   384 pages   Knopf/hard cover 1999Greer on genital mutilation:

"The opinion that male circumcision might be bad for babies, bad for sex and bad for men is steadily gaining ground. ...No UN agency has uttered a protocol condemning the widespread practice of male genital mutilation, which will not be challenged until doctors start to be sued in large numbers by men they mutilated as infants. ...Silence about male mutilation in our own countries combines nicely with noisiness on female mutilation in other countries to reinforce our notions of cultural superiority."
