![]() Leonard B. Glick, 370 pg. Oxford University Press 2005
The book of Genesis tells us that God made a covenant with Abraham,
promising him a glorious posterity on the condition that he and all his
male descendents must be circumcised. For thousands of years thereafter,
the distinctive practice of circumcision served to set the Jews apart
from their neighbors. The apostle Paul rejected it as a worthless
practice, emblematic of Judaism's fixation on physical matters.
Christian theologians followed his lead, arguing that whereas Christians
sought spiritual fulfillment, Jews remained mired in such pointless
concerns as diet and circumcision. In this book, Leonard B. Glick offers
a history of Jewish and Christian beliefs about circumcision from its
ancient origins to the current controversy. In Jewish circles it is
virtually taboo to question circumcision, but Glick does not flinch from
asking whether this procedure should continue to be the defining feature
of modern Jewish identity.

Once again, the subject of her impassioned treatise is the genital mutilation of non-consenting minors, whose practice has not only been culturally embedded in Africa over millennia, but which has been medicalized in the United States on male, female and intersex children since the mid-eighteen-hundreds. Chapter on male circumcision quotes NOHARMM Director Tim Hammond extensively. |

Paul M. Fleiss, M.D./Frederick M. Hodges 368 pg. Warner Books/paperback 2002 "From information about penile anatomy to the various health risks related to the surgery to debunking all six of the most common arguments doctors use when recommending circumcision..." |
"The opinion that male circumcision might be bad for babies, bad for sex and bad for men is steadily gaining ground. ...No UN agency has uttered a protocol condemning the widespread practice of male genital mutilation, which will not be challenged until doctors start to be sued in large numbers by men they mutilated as infants. ...Silence about male mutilation in our own countries combines nicely with noisiness on female mutilation in other countries to reinforce our notions of cultural superiority." |
