Unkind Cut from Nod to Culture
New Zealand Herald-Metro Edition, 16 July 1997
Nui Nui Junior Liu is unlikely to forget his traumatic "rite of passage". The quick flick of the scalpel led to hours of bleeding and an emergency dash to hospital. The 13-year-old boy collapsed from loss of blood, 26 hours after being circumcised by his doctor.
His father, Frank Liu, said the circumcision was done for cultural reasons, but it was important that parents knew complications could arise. The family was told to use cloths, soaked in salted water, to stop the bleeding. Mr. Liu said his son went through numerous towels but the bleeding continued. He finally blacked out on his way to the toilet.
The clinical director of paediatric surgery at the Starship Childrens' Hospital, Dr. Percy Pease, said a handful of children were admitted every year after circumcision. Bleeding usually came from a blood vessel which was cut when the foreskin was removed. In rare situations, blood transfusions were needed. Dr. Pease said increased age did not make boys more prone to bleeding. "If bleeding persists, even after applying pressure, then the child needs to be reviewed." The patient could become anaemic, so quick medical attention was vital, said Dr. Pease.
